Dr. Ivan Damjanov is an internationally known pathologist who has achieved worldwide renown as an author, editor, and educator. An expert in medical communications and a respected educator, Dr. Damjanov has taught generations of medical and graduate students.

Dr. Damjanov graduated from the Zagreb University Medical School. After completing a residency in pathology, he moved to the USA, where he continued his illustrious scientific and medical career. He has done outstanding research in developmental biology and teratology. He pioneered the use of teratoma as an experimental model system for the study of early development and his knowledge of differentiation in neoplasia has been instrumental in shaping the future of stem cell biology and regenerative medicine. He has participated in many impressive scientific projects and shared his knowledge with scientists internationally. By means of his vision and leadership skills, he has helped many medical universities outside the USA to attain the highest standards of excellence in science.

Dr. Damjanov began teaching pathology in 1973. He organized and directed pathology courses at Hahnemann Medical School and Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He is passionate about pathology education, displaying a profound insight into the philosophy and practice of teaching. He has influenced countless students by his lectures, tutorials, scholarly journal articles, and colorful textbooks.

Dr. Damjanov has authored over 300 papers and more than 20 medical books and textbooks and has served on the editorial board of several journals. He was the Associate Editor of Laboratory Investigation for 12 years, and the North American Editor of Differentiation for 10 years. His texts are written from the perspective of the student who is struggling to master the often-bewildering array of facts presented to them in their introductory exposure to concepts of disease. Dr. Damjanov has also written thousands of test questions to accompany his textbooks.

Because of his commitment to the success of medical students, Dr. Damjanov established remedial pathology courses in Philadelphia and Kansas. He believes, and has clearly demonstrated, that all students can succeed if they are given the right learning environment. Dr. Damjanov also established honors programs in pathology to meet the needs of top students. For many years, Dr. Damjanov has been welcoming students, residents, and pathologists from all global universities into his home.

Dr. Damjanov is currently a professor of pathology at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. His major contribution lies in educational reform, where emphasis was shifted from lectures and passive learning to computer-based discussion groups and seminars that promoted problem-based (active) learning.

Dr. Hallak has over 20 years of experience in the pharmaceutical and biotech industry, where he has been able to showcase his extensive research, teaching, and medical writing expertise. Dr. Hallak has worked in various therapeutic areas including Oncology, with an emphasis on tyrosine kinases, EGFR, VGFR and IGF-IR. His preclinical studies were presented at national meetings, including GI-ASCO and ASCO. His other areas of expertise include neuropsychopharmacology, including Alzheimer’s disease and epilepsy; diabetes; and cardiovascular disease, with an emphasis on hypertension.

As a scientist, Dr. Hallak is able to quickly understand and master the subject matter at hand, and communicate the information clearly and accurately. He rapidly incorporates the latest medical education techniques in his writing style. His work has been praised by clients as being of high quality and appropriate to the target audience.

Dr. Hallak holds a PhD degree in Medical Biochemistry, and a Masters degree in Human Nutrition. He completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania Department Of Pharmacology. After being on the faculty at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Dr. Hallak joined Thomas Jefferson University as a professor of pathology, anatomy and cell biology, where he remains as an adjunct professor. Dr. Hallak remains active in the academic world. He has reviewed a number of medical text books, and he continues to attend and present at several scientific meeting a year. He has over 50 publications in various therapeutic areas.

Nevena Damjanov, MD

Dr. Nevena Damjanov is a board certified Hematologist and Oncologist with almost 20 years of experience. She is well known and highly respected among her peers.

Dr. Damjanov received her medical training in Philadelphia, at the Hahnemann University School of Medicine. She completed her residency at the Pennsylvania State University, M.S. Hershey Medical Center, and her Hematology and Oncology Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, and the Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. Dr. Damjanov is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in internal medicine, oncology and hematology. She has been on the faculty of Case Western Reserve University, Temple University, Fox Chase Cancer Center and the University of Pennsylvania, where she continues with her academic activities. She is active in teaching medical students, residents and post-doctoral fellows, as well as graduate students in the biological sciences.

Dr. Damjanov has a longstanding interest in continuing medical education. Committed to educating both the medical profession and the public about the newest treatments for malignant diseases, Dr. Damjanov lectures frequently on the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and its complications. She is a sought-after speaker, and she remains active in several speaker’s bureaus, presenting both CME and promotional lectures. In addition, she has presented her work at national meetings, and published extensively in peer-reviewed publications.

Dr. Damjanov and her family reside in the Philadelphia area, where she remains active in her academic practice, treating patients and participating in clinical trials.

Ms. Damjanov received a masters degree in journalism at the Columbia University School of Journalism in New York City. She spent four years as an editor covering the shopping beat at Time Out New York magazine, before moving to Conde Nast's Lucky, where she developed and oversaw the magazine's home section.
